History of the PlantThe construction of Kola NPP was started in the 1960s. The region was quickly developing and needed additional energy. But Kola Peninsula had only water resources and all of them were already employed. So, the Soviet authorities decided to build the first NPP in the polar region. In 1967 the State Construction Ministry of the USSR approved the project. On May 18, 1969, the construction was launched, with Alexander Belov appointed as the director. Belov was candidate of technical sciences, three-time laureate of the State Prize, an experienced manager. Alexander Andrushenko was appointed as the head of the Construction Department. The constructors worked quickly and efficiently and on June 29 1973 the 1 st unit of Kola NPP was already launched. That year the plant generated 1bln KWh. The 2nd unit was launched just 1.5 years later, on Dec 8,1974; the third - on Mar, 1981, the 4 th - on Oct 11, 1984. Photo-gallery |
