International activities

Safety enhancement is one of the key tasks of the personnel and international cooperation is one of the best ways to attain this goal. Kola NPP has been cooperating with foreign partners since the early 1990s on the basis of the Nuclear Safety Strategy adopted by the Munich Summit in 1992.

The closest neighbors, Sweden, Norway and Finland, are the most active partners.  

Foreign partners help Kola NPP to acquire experience, to adopt modern technologies and to improve its safety policy, particularly, in:

• modernization;
• document management;
• personnel training.

In its international cooperation Kola NPP is guided by IAEA recommendations and Rosatom and Rosenergoatom directives.

The international cooperation is carried out in the following directions:

• safety enhancement programs by EU and US, more specifically: technical support by the Government of Norway, technical support by the Government of Finland, technical support by the Government of Sweden, TACIS program, Nuclear Safety Account by EBRD (over), International Nuclear Safety Program by US Department of Energy;
• Kola NPP is actively involved in WANO and IAEA programs: operating experience exchange, partner inspections, technical support, professional development, information contacts, WWER-440 Club, etc.
• Kola NPP actively cooperates with NPPs of Eastern and Western Europe: Dukovany, Bohunice, Kozloduy, Paks, Armenian, Rivno, Emsland, Loviisa and Olkiluoto NPPs - experience exchange, visits, inspections.

In the past 15 years the safety of Kola NPP has been significantly enhanced, which has been confirmed by international inspections (IAEA, WANO, independent national experts).

International cooperation gives Kola NPP access to the international experience in applying modern technologies for modernization and reconstruction and improving the quality of operation and maintenance.
